The New Miami Science  MuseumIn November 2005, Miami-Dade County residents approved the issuance of a municipal bond that includes $175 million for the construction of a new Miami Science Museum. The Museum will be part of a new cultural sector that promises to revitalize the city center. The Miami city government approved a resolution that sets aside 1.6 hectares for the location of the new Museum in Bicentennial Park near downtown. The city also contributed $3.5 million to the development of the venue, which will include the new Miami Art Museum and the South Florida Museum of History. The new Museum Park will combine science, art and history in a unique experience next to beautiful Biscayne Bay in the heart of Miami.

Grimshaw Architects was named the winner of the architectural competition to design Miami’s new $275 million Science Museum. Zaha Hadid’s supporters lamented that the 2004 Pritzker Prize winner had come in second. Steven Holls’ company, based in San Francisco, took third place according to the votes of the committee of 8 people who met in a public forum for two days at the current Science Museum.
