Bike trails

Miami offers a good collection of bike trails, trails and greenways. For example, shaded by Australian pine trees and mangrove thickets, Oleta River State Park in North Miami offers more than 14 miles of mountain bike trails. One of the nicest bike rides in the neighborhood is the stretch along Old Cutler Road from Sunset Drive to Matheson Hammock Park. There is also a trail at Snapper Creek that starts at approximately SW 57th Avenue and Kendall Drive, right next to Dante Fascell Park. Miami Critical Mass is a great way to get to know the local cycling scene. It is a cycling event that is usually held on the last Friday of each month and is a way for cyclists to travel together as a group through the city.

Safety Tips for Cyclists:

• Review and obey Florida bicycle laws. For example, the law states that you must have a red tail light and a front light if you travel at night. And it’s illegal to wear headphones while riding a bike.
• Ride in the lane/shoulder of the bike and be sure to exercise extreme caution with motorists. Stay in the right lane and do not cross the midline in the opposite lane.
• Performance to emergency vehicles, buses and pedestrians.
• Do not drink alcohol and ride a bicycle. It is possible in Florida to be arrested for riding a bicycle under the influence.
• When passing pedestrians, it is helpful to ring a bell and/or say “to your left” to alert them and avoid collisions.
• Always use a high-quality lock to secure your bike (11-18mm U-locks are much better than cable locks).
