David Beckhman and his group of investors plan to begin negotiations with the City of Miami to build a football stadium on city-owned land near Marlins Park. Beckham said the site offers the possibility of combining football with baseball and turning the area into a magnificent entertainment district.

Beckham wants to build football stadium near Marlins Park in Miami

The University of Miami is not part of the business, Marcelo Claure, Beckham’s partner, said Friday. That would mean Beckham’s team has to build only the stadium, rather than in collaboration with U-M, which also wanted to use the park for the school’s football team.

In an interview, Claure said, “The time is now… The moment of truth has arrived.” Claure said his architects concluded that the roads and streets surrounding the stadium grounds should not be altered.

Claure added that the construction would be privately funded. Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado announced the tentative agreement Friday at a news conference following a video conference with Claure.

Regalado said he would seek approval from Miami commissioners to begin talks. “This is really historic,” Regalado told reporters.
