Those who live in Florida or who plan to go and have in mind to cruise or go to the port for business, what happens in most cases is that they have on the radar the Port of Miami, the emblematic port of Miami that is, perhaps, the one that steals the most attention of the people, even many believe that Florida only has one port in allusion to this, because thanks to the Port of Miami the city has been cataloged the cruise capital of the world -deserved recognition-, but the truth is that the State of Florida has five ports from where the most prestigious cruises depart, let’s see:
The port infrastructure of the State of Florida is composed of: the Port of Miami; the Port of the Everglades (located in Fort Lauderdale); Port Canaveral (also known as Orlando); the Port of Tampa; and, the Port of Jacksonville. Of these five ports, the busiest by volume of operation and importance are the Port of Miami and the Port of Fort Lauderdale.
The Port of Miami
This port year after year announces the breaking of a new record figure in the number of passengers (cruise ships that sail) and in the volumes of cargo capacity (commercial ships it receives), in the last ten years its growth figures have been exponential. Two days ago, on December 11, 2019, at its dock it received the largest merchant ship ever docked in the State of Florida. This is the merchant ship Magellan whose cargo capacity amounts to 150 thousand tons and more than 113 thousand containers of merchandise.
This is due to a policy of promotion and development of maritime trade in South Florida, which began with a multimillion-dollar injection (USD 1300) to the Port of Miami to expand its infrastructure.
In principle the bet was to dredge the channel that leads to the Port of Miami to go from 44 feet to 52 and thus be able to receive large vessels as warned with the robbery of the Magellan ship.
