Djokovic and Federer Help Open New Miami Open

The Serbian is seeking a record seventh title at the second ATP Masters 1000 title of the year

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will not play doubles together at the Miami Open presented by Itau, but the two former Miami champions took to the court together on Wednesday to cut the ribbon for the opening of the tournament’s main stadium.

Djokovic, seeking a seventh title in Miami, and three-time champion Federer joined WTA players Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams to celebrate the first day of play in the main draw at Hard Rock Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.

The second ATP Masters 1000 event of the season is being held at Miami Gardens for the first time in 32 years in Key Biscayne. The ATP Masters 1000 tournament is being held in Miami Gardens for the first time, after 32 years in Key Biscayne. Previously, the tournament was also held in Delray Beach (1985) and Boca Raton (1986).

The number of seats in the main stadium is 13,800, plus another 5,191 in the grandstand. In addition, he has 3,024 on track 1 and 1,564 on Butch Buchholz court. Overall, the complex has 12 match courts and 18 training courts. So far, players seem to be impressed with the expansive new terrains.

“For the players, the facility is much bigger, there’s a lot more space and a lot more courts, so playing tennis here is great,” Zverev said.

But the 2018 finalist said he’ll miss the atmosphere in Key Biscayne. “Crandon Park had something to do with it. He had some feeling, some energy, something Spanish and the crowd was always energetic. I don’t know what it’s going to be like here,” he said. “Hopefully, it’ll be a similar feeling.”

Djokovic was impressed with the details of the new complex. “I think the color [de la cancha] is really nice. It resembles the ocean and water. It’s the color of the Miami Dolphins, and we’re invited to their stadium for the first time this year.”

“It’s been a bold move for one of the biggest tournaments in [reubicar] the world in Key Biscayne, a historic venue where this tournament was held for so many years, in a football stadium and to create something very different that we don’t have. It’s a brave move that can bring many benefits to our sport as a whole. I’ve trained on Centre Court and it’s very good. I know how much effort, energy and work has gone into putting this event together.”

Defending champion John Isner will not be able to relive the memories of his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Key Biscayne, but the American is open-minded.

“Being here for the first time is really cool and unique. As the defending champion, it’s a different feeling because it’s a completely different place,” Isner said.

Federer, who is playing in the tournament for the 18th time, will miss Key Biscayne like his teammates. But he’s also excited about the new site.

“It’s a big change. We left an iconic place in our sport like Key Biscayne,” he said. “But at the same time, it’s good to see the innovation, it’s good to see the growth, and I hope that’s exactly what happens here.”
