The devastating consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic are no secret to anyone in the world. One of the effects was the general decline in the quality of life globally, which can be seen by consulting the ranking prepared by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a company part of The Economist group responsible for analyzing information to understand the evolution of the world and possible investment opportunities, among others.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) is primarily known for its reports covering all kinds of economic sectors and current affairs. One of the most famous is the list of the hundred and forty (140) best cities to live in the world. According to this list, this was a year full of surprises: Auckland (New Zealand) was the winning city, most European cities experienced sharp drops in this list and several American cities rose positions as was the case with Miami.
In 2021 the city moved up twenty-four (24) seats, ranking twenty-eight (28) out of one hundred and forty (140) cities evaluated. There are obvious factors that make Miami an attractive city such as its year-round tropical climate, multiculturalism, having the largest cruise port in the world, etc. But in the ranking five aspects are evaluated, which are explained below:
- Stability: refers to petty crime, violent crime, threat of terrorism, military conflicts and civil conflicts. In a country like the United States, the last three do not apply.
Miami has the typical crime rates of a large city, but since 2,000 the numbers have decreased from (2,000) violent incidents per year to around six hundred (600) in 2019. In general terms it is a very safe city.
2. Health System : among the aspects to be considered are: availability and quality of private health institutions, availability and quality of public institutions, availability of medicines and general conditions of the health system. For the 2021 ranking, this was the most important aspect in the global ranking. Despite being one of the cities with the highest cases of COVID-19 in the country, the health system was able to preserve the well-being of its population, having one of the lowest mortality rates in the country.
3. Cultural environment: among the factors that were taken into account are climate, corruption, social or religious restrictions, censorship, availability of sports or cultural activities, food, gastronomic offer, services and general goods. It is no secret to anyone that Miami is a multicultural, coastal city, with a tropical climate all year round with an impressive cultural offer for all tastes and budgets.
One of its great attractions is the openness to almost all religions, races, social beliefs, sexual identity, etc. Possibly, along with Los Angeles and New York, it is the city with the most cultural offer and open to immigrants in the USA.
4. Education: aspects such as the availability and quality of private education and the level of public education are taken into account. According to the PISA tests, it has a good quality of education. Educational institutions have a medium-high level of education and in general 77% of students are comfortable in their school.
Universities also have a good level. There are currently fifty-nine (59) universities in the Miami metropolitan area. The best known are Miami Dade College, Florida International University, Barry University, Carlos Albizu University, City College-Miami and Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico-Miami Campus.
5. Infrastructure: the quality of roads, public transport, international connections, housing quality, energy, water and telecommunications are evaluated. Miami prides itself on having one of the best infrastructure systems in the USA: its airport is the third busiest in the country.
The tracks are of the best quality. New houses and apartments are constantly being built to house residents and future immigrants, because it must be said Miami is a city with excellent urban planning.
