(EFE). A part of the history of the legendary American mobster Al Capone opened its doors to visitors: its summer house in Palm Island (Florida), a property of almost 2,800 square meters, colonial style, in which he spent seasons of his life, especially after leaving prison where he served time for tax evasion.

Located on the central and noble Palm Avenue of Miami Beach, the mansion, built in 1922, has undergone a complete remodeling worth more than one and a half million euros, by its current owners, MB America, a real estate company that acquired it in May 2014 for more than seven million euros, and has renamed it 93 Palm.

The complex consists of a fortified gate, a nine-room mansion, and a cabin overlooking the pool and Key Biscayne.

For years and after Al Capone’s death in 1947, his wife Mae sold the property to an investor in 1952. Until the recent purchase by this real estate investment firm, the summer residence of the Italian-born mafioso suffered deterioration caused by abandonment and lack of maintenance. The renovation has kept some of the original details of the style of the 20s, such as lighting, and a bridge made of red coral, which crosses a small lake in the garden.

Al Capone, who had enjoyed Miami on previous visits, acquired this property in 1928, a time when tourism in the city was in decline, following the passage of a hurricane. He was not well received by either the authorities or the inhabitants: he was accused of attracting gambling and other illicit activities to the area, and was even arrested on several occasions.

After spending six and a half years in jail for tax evasion, the “public enemy number one” of the US returned to Miami in 1939, to enjoy this home.

Despite the fact that, during the years he spent in Florida, Al Capone did not enjoy good health, he celebrated sumptuous parties in this place, which lived its years during the time of Prohibition. This luxurious residence witnessed both family scenes and camaraderie among the members of the band he led, who spent time enjoying its facilities.
