The city’s greatest achievement is that Miami Beach’s building code requires LEED Silver certification for all new public projects and the Miami Beach Convention Center will achieve this standard. Design elements include rainfall harvesting for storage and use in cooling towers, installation of reduced flow water appliances, shaded areas on the outer perimeter of the building, daytime lighting of public spaces, use of high-efficiency LED lighting, use of occupancy light sensors throughout the building, conservation of 200 existing trees and planting of a new tree canopy, in addition to reducing energy consumption by 20%. On the other hand, city officials are trying to fix the problem of sea level rise in several ways:

Collins Canal: The city is making improvements to the existing edge of the canal taking into account flood estimation requirements based on new estimates of sea level rise. Mangrove habitats and endemic vegetation will be restored throughout the canal.
Storms: The project is being designed for 25-year events, with 3-day storms as the maximum storage capacity for water accumulation. The design also increases the overall permeable area of the campus by 245%, thereby reducing the heat island effect by replacing 6.2 acres of asphalt with gardens.

Miami , being characterized as one of the most tourist cities and that is transforming to achieve a more sustainable development, also has more hotels that have taken the initiative to integrate into this trend and therefore be more friendly to the environment. Some hotels are members of Florida Green Lodging and others are LEED certified. Florida Green Lodging rates properties in five areas of sustainable practices. These include: Communication and Education; Waste reduction, reuse and recycling; Water conservation; Energy efficiency and indoor air quality. Some of these hotels are:

The Palms Hotel & Spa a hotel that is characterized by the nature that surrounds it. His organic restaurant Essensia that brings produce from farm to table, is a true bastion for sustainable cuisine. He incorporates ingredients from his garden and local suppliers into the dishes he offers, while also using them in his magnificent craft cocktails.

Moreover, The 1 Hotel South Beach is a luxury lifestyle hotel that celebrates nature with an eco-friendly mission. As a LEED Silver certified project, the hotel used reclaimed wood throughout the interiors. In this hotel there is no paper or plastic products in the guest rooms. Instead, you’ll find “triple clear” water filters on all faucets, to replace plastic bottles, a fancy little whiteboard instead of paper and pen and a 1 Hotel field guide app instead of brochures. There is also a small fleet of Tesla electric cars available to hotel guests.

Miami also has the Hampton Inn & Suites Miami Brickell / Downtown which has the distinction of being the first LEED certified hotel in Miami. Located in the heart of Brickell, with the popular Batch Gastropub at ground level, the hotel offers panoramic views of Miami’s skyline and keeps prices and carbon footprint low.

Finally, the city, being committed to the theme of sustainability, in recent years has hosted the E-merge Americas event. A unique call for global companies, leading startups and government leaders focused on innovative solutions from digital transformation industries. Where more and more proposals are presented that promote sustainability through technology. Some of the speakers that this event has received are: Steve Wozniak co-founder of Apple, Uri Levine, co-founder of Waze and Peter Diamandis, author of X Prise Foundation, of the Singularity University NYT best seller, the University that will hold the SingularityU Colombia Summit in November.
