The Florida city of Orlando, known for its famous theme parks, broke the record of visitors in 2014, surpassing the 59 million registered in 2013, according to the official tourism association Visit Orlando.
“This historic milestone of more than 62 million visitors in 2014 is the latest testament to Orlando’s leadership in the tourism sector,” Visit Orlando President George Ague said in a statement, calling these record numbers a “tribute to our community’s steadfast commitment and continued investment in tourism.”
Another new record was set in hotel bed tax collection, with more than $200 million in Orange County, where 32 million hotel room occupancy was recorded.
“Surpassing 60 million visitors marks a significant achievement for Orlando and the U.S. travel industry, which generates $2.1 trillion in the U.S. economy annually, according to the agency.
In 2014, Walt Disney World Resort completed the new Fantalyland, in Magic Kingdom park, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, in Diagon Alley (Universal Orlando).
This new “alley” connects to the “Wizarding World of Harry Potter”, opened in 2010, through the Hogwarts Express, a reproduction of the famous train of the films of the saga based on the stories of the writer J.K. Rowling.
